Alex Backhouse is a filmmaker from Hamilton, Aotearoa / New Zealand.
His work takes a forensic approach to genre with an emphasis on psychology, surrealism and emotional life over traditional narrative. Ruptures in the everyday world are treated as neither threat nor spectacle, but an invitation to new forms of perception.
His first short Unnatural History premiered in competition at the 2014 Locarno Film Festival, and the following year was included in Out of the Mist, a documentary on the history of experimental filmmaking in New Zealand. His follow-up, Explorer, screened in the 2016 NZIFF's ‘Spectral Visions’ programme.
He has also edited exhibition films and worked in post-production for NZ On Screen, Park Road Post and the National Library of New Zealand.
